Chat Safety Tips for Parents

As mobiles move to more web based features and are becoming more 'feature rich' the safety issues around internet usage must be applied to mobile phone use. Mobile telephones are generally 'always on' and kept on the person, making usage difficult to supervise. It is therefore essential that you talk to your children about the potential dangers of online chat rooms and make sure that they are aware of the rules that will ensure their safety.

It is also important for parents to understand what the recommended minimum age is for a mobile chat room, and to advise their children accordingly.

The main danger for children is potential contact from someone in the chat room who may wish to harm them. Stranger Danger has never been more relevant.

Jumbuck does offer mobile carriers the ability to have their chat service moderated, and this certainly lessens the danger. All Jumbuck chat services have an electronic filter that censors certain words and numbers from ever being posted in the chat room. It is important, however, that children are aware of the potential dangers that chat rooms generally pose, and Jumbuck's simple Chat Tips should always be remembered when using any chat service, whether it be online or on mobile:

Chat Tips and Safety

Jumbuck's chat services are all about communicating, meeting new people from around the world in the mobile web and having FUN! At the same time, there are a few things you should remember to help make the chat rooms friendly and safe.

Please Note: Chat Tips & Safety information is also available within our chat services in the Help Menu. End Chat Session and Report Another User functions are also available within Jumbuck's chat services.

  • Be careful who you trust online, and don't believe everything you are told. Remember that online friends are really strangers and may not be who they say they are no matter how long you have been talking to them. It's very easy for people to play different roles when they are in a chat room.
  • Chat Friends are for Chat Rooms.
  • Don't give out personal information when chatting online. Many chat users will ask you for your ASL or Age, Sex, Location. When asked be very careful about how much information you give. Remember that you are chatting to people you have never met and are not always who they say they are. Give a general location such as the city or country you live in. Never mention specific locations such as street, school, workplace, train station or even a sporting team you play in. Remember that you are in charge.
  • Never give out your mobile number or email address to anyone. Though you may want to give out your mobile or phone number to someone you are getting on well with, please remember that you don't know them and everyone else in the room will see your details. If you wish to chat to someone privately, choose a one to one chat which you can leave at any stage if you don't feel comfortable.
  • Profiles must never include any personal information that would allow another user to contact you.Never include your full name, address, telephone number, mobile number, private email address bus or train route, workplace, school, and other personal information.
  • Use a nickname, not your real name. Don't ever give out your full name. Don't use nicknames that are going to attract the wrong type of attention.
  • Leave an unpleasant situation in a chat room simply by logging out. Remember don't feel pressured or bullied in a chat room. You have the ability to change your username, your chat partner or the chat room you are in at any stage.
  • Pick the right room. Chat has a variety of different rooms so that you can find people with similar interests who want to chat. If you don't feel comfortable with the chat topic in a room at any stage, choose to leave.
  • Look out for your online friends and take action if you think that they are at risk.
  • Tell your parent, carer or contact Jumbuck via the customer support form if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried. Have fun. Jumbuck's chat services are about having fun and communicating. Relax and enjoy meeting new people, just remember to use your common sense while doing so!
